Description: I will dearly miss this wonderful piece as I continue my living estate sale. A fine work by artist, lithographer and print maker John Gast of Brooklyn N. Y.. Two young lovers on a rolling sea accompanied by a sleeping helmsman entitled "A LOVE TALE". I cannot tell you exactly what printing technique was incorporated in the day for the creation of this exciting piece. It seems to be an oil embellished print. There is certainly a slick texture to the surface of the paper unlike any typical lithograph from the era. Gast was a very talented individual and whether this process was his own idea or created jointly through the knowledge of the J H Hill Co which was involved in publication is a guess at this point. Gast's name and copyright date of 1895 are listed lower left. In the very bottom left and right edges are the instructions on how to best view and frame this "Oil Painting" as they self describe it. I tried to include proper magnified photos to give the best understanding of the piece. Whatever the applied finish coat to the work was, it has certainly maintained a very pliable feel to the paper. Looking at the photo of the verso, it is obvious this is the original framing and wood slat back matting. Just an exception fun and colorful art work which measures 16" x 25". I cannot say I find anything of comparable offer out there in the market place outside of a long list of high values for John Gast's works. I understand this is a difficult piece to establish value so I will just list it where I feel it belongs in my heart and use my typical "Best Offer format to be open to additional information or conditional bids.
