Description: Check out my other garden delights! Apiarists, homesteaders, and gardeners will definitely find something of interest! Taxonomic Information: Genus: Opuntia Species: humifusa Synonyms: Opuntia compressa, Opuntia compressa var. humifosa Common Names: Eastern Cactus, Eastern Prickly Pear, Cold Hardy Prickly Pear, Eastern Nopal Description: Eastern prickly pear is a garden favorite. It can be grown in all 48 continental states and southern Alaska. Its natural range is from Canada to Florida and westward. All it needs is a bit of sandy soil and sun. I like tough plants, and the prickly pear certainly fits the bill. In the spring, the cactus grows new cladodes, along with flower buds. The buds turn red (as you can see in my second picture). The buds give way to beautiful flowers. The beautiful yellow flowers give way to wonderful red fruits, also called "pears." My pears taste of sweet watermelon. The cactus is one of the most edible plants out there! You can eat the pads, flower petals, and fruits! I will include our favorite recipes. The cheerful blossoms attract pollinators, including butterflies and hummingbirds. What is Included: One fully rooted prickly pear, freshly unearthed and well-packaged! Planting Instructions: Prepare your growing media. You can plant prickly pear in the ground or in pots/containers. The soil must be sandy. If you are not sure how to make sandy soil, you can use 10 parts sand to 1 part garden soil. The pads should be planted in the soil, upright. The depth is not very important; it is more of an aesthetic choice. You can plant it 0.25inch deep or halfway up the pad. Be sure that the soil drainage is above average.
